The City of Valdez Parks & Recreation Department is excited to announce their partnership with Alaska Sea Grant to bring coastal & marine-related education to the youth of our community. Alaska Sea Grant is both a leader in Alaska marine-related environmental and K-16 Science-Technology-Engineering-Mathematics (STEM) education and in providing its community and industry partners with information that is accurate, timely and useful. 2 Coastal Connection Camp Leaders are needed to aid in this opportunity for the summer of 2025.

Summary: Under the supervision of the Recreation Coordinator and Marine Education Specialist with Alaska Sea Grant, this position will coordinate, supervise, plan and implement the daily operations of the Valdez Coastal Connections Camp. This position supervises program participants. This program will work in both indoor and outdoor environments and may be subjected to inclement weather condition, various terrain, hiking, lifting, and other physical activities.

This is a temporary seasonal position to work no more than 37.5 hours per week for a specified season. Rate of pay is $23.75 - $25.70 per hour, non-benefited. Anticipated start date is June 2, 2025

Review of applications begins May 19, 2025. Primary Duties and Responsibilities: Provide customer service to program participants. Research, develop, organize and implement age-appropriate lesson plans and activities which promote development and progression of skills among participants.

Ability to adapt instructions for participants with special conditions or physical limitations. Transport participants in a City vehicle to off-site locations as needed. Assists with program record keeping, including confidential participant records.

Works in a safe manner and reports unsafe activity and conditions, and intervenes when necessary. Responds to emergency situations as required and maintains accurate reporting. Works as a team member; maintains a cooperative attitude with employees, staff and supervisors.

Communicates with participants, parents, staff and supervisors using a variety of methods. Maintains a clean and safe environment for all participants. Enforces Rules of Conduct and monitors follow through of suspension or ejections and forwards information to supervisor.

May perform general cleaning and light maintenance as needed. Must comply with City and departmental rules, regulations, policies, and procedures. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Other Characteristics: Possess good working knowledge of educational programs, including planning, instruction and operations. Should be highly motivated, upbeat, engaged and enjoy working with youth. Demonstrates excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.

Leadership skills Ability to work effectively with various age groups. Ability to work in a fast-paced and changing environment. Ability to multi-task and prioritize tasks.

Ability to follow instructions and policies; both written and verbal Ability to act as a role model to participants during activities and trips (cleanliness, punctuality and sportsmanship). Interest in, or studies of, marine science and ecology is a plus but not required. Experience with outdoor environmental education preferred.

Minimum Qualifications: Recreation Minimum 18 years or older Supervisory experience in a recreation setting is desired. Obtain and maintain First Aid/CPR/AED Certification within the first month of work (training provided). Valid State of Alaska Driver's License.

Must pass background check Must provide driving abstract Teaching certificate desired but not required. Two years' experience or related educational course work in the specified field for any instructional work. Physical requirement and work environment: Work environment is varied depending on facility, venue and program; indoor and outdoor year round.

Possibility of working in inclement weather. Physical ability to participate in activities; run climb, swim, lift or support the weight of children. Ability to hike 6 miles over varied terrain.
